The rating of the ruling coalition in Germany remains below the election result
Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU/CSU party bloc has started 2026 with a moderate increase in electoral support. According to the first INSA poll of the new year, conducted from 30 December to 2 January, the Union receives 25 per cent of the vote, up 1 percentage point from the pre-Christmas measurement. This was reported by Bild.
Nevertheless, the CDU/CSU bloc, along with SPD with only 39 per cent, 6 points less than the result of the 2025 federal elections. The Social Democrats hold 14 per cent of support unchanged.

The AfD retains the highest rate with 26 per cent with AfD. the Greens lost 1 point and dropped to 11 per cent, equal to Left Party, which maintained the same level. FDP and BSW have 4 per cent each, with another 5 per cent going to other political forces.
According to INSA, about 13 per cent of the vote goes to parties that do not pass the five per cent threshold. This means that a parliamentary majority is possible with 44 per cent. At the same time, the current coalition falls short of this figure, and the only arithmetically possible option for a majority without the AfD is currently an alliance of the CDU/CSU, SPD and Greens with a total of 50 per cent.
