The Russian contingent is trapped: Transnistria is in complete isolation
About 1,500 Russian military personnel stationed in unrecognised Transnistria have been effectively isolated after Ukraine and Moldova imposed a total blockade of the region on 1 January. This is reported by Libertatea with reference to regional and European analytical sources.
Ukraine has imposed strict border controls along its approximately 450 kilometres of border with Transnistria, allowing only limited and carefully checked movements of people and goods. At the same time, Chisinau has tightened the operation of checkpoints and deployed mobile units to control unofficial routes. Moldova's airspace is completely closed to supplies to the region, and rail and road connections are possible only under strict conditions.
According to experts, the purpose of these steps is not a military escalation, but a gradual and legal weakening of Russia's influence. Due to the blocking of informal trade and logistics routes, the Russian contingent is facing problems with fuel, equipment and daily resources. According to analysts, Russia's presence in Transnistria is becoming increasingly expensive and less effective as an instrument of geopolitical pressure.
At the same time, the blockade has hit the economy of the region itself. According to the Financial Times, Transnistria is experiencing the deepest economic crisis since its creation: disrupted trade ties, suspended supply of free Russian gas and growing dependence on routes controlled by official Chisinau. Experts believe that if the blockade remains in place, Russia's position in the region will continue to weaken, and Moldova will move closer to European security structures.
