Seasonal surplus: potato prices are falling sharply in Ukraine
This is reported by Informator, citing market analysis and data from industry experts.
Why is the vegetable falling in price?
As explained by Natalia Zakharchuk, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Potato Growing of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences and Candidate of Biological Sciences, the current price pressure is due to several factors:
-
A successful season: the 2025 harvest turned out to be significantly larger than the previous year’s.
-
Planting area: farmers have increased the area under potato cultivation, leading to a surplus.
-
Price trends: according to statistics, in April alone the average price fell by 5.92%, whilst the consumer price index stood at 94.08%.
Prices in shops: where it’s cheaper
Despite the general downward trend, potato prices vary significantly across major chains. The average price for last season’s crop is currently 18.7 UAH/kg (compared to 19.18 UAH in March).
-
Best deals: Auchan offers the lowest price for old potatoes (14.9 UAH/kg).
-
Highest prices: at Megamarket, the price reaches 22.5 UAH/kg.
Meanwhile, new potatoes remain a luxury item. Their average price in April jumped to 38.42 UAH/kg. The most affordable option for ‘new’ potatoes is at Auchan (24.4 UAH), whilst at Metro you’ll have to pay nearly 51 UAH/kg.
