Social media fame to the rescue: a buffalo resembling Trump was not sacrificed in Bangladesh
An albino buffalo has been named after US President Donald Trump
In Bangladesh, a rare albino buffalo, named after US President Donald Trump, was saved from a ritual sacrifice after gaining popularity on social media.

This is according to Reuters.

The buffalo, weighing almost 700 kg, was due to be sacrificed for the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha on 28 May. It had already been sold for this purpose, but a day before the festival, Bangladesh’s Home Minister ordered that it be rescued and the buyer be refunded.

The minister explained his decision on the grounds of safety and an “unusually high level of public interest”. The buffalo will now be taken to the national zoo in Dhaka.

The buffalo became popular after videos of it went viral on social media. People began comparing the animal to Donald Trump because of its distinctive light-coloured tuft of hair. The farm’s owner, Ziauddin Mridha, said that his younger brother had named the buffalo after the US president.

Hundreds of people flocked to the farm to see the buffalo and have their photo taken with it. Mridha says the animal is extremely gentle and requires special care, including regular baths.

Albino buffaloes are a great rarity in Bangladesh, where cattle are usually dark in colour. It is likely that the animal’s unusual appearance and striking nickname saved its life.
