Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Race: who won in Shanghai and how did the drivers finish?

The first Formula 1 race of the season in Shanghai ended with a victory for George Russell, whilst 19-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli sensationally won the qualifying session for the main race.

The first sprint race of the 2026 Formula 1 season took place on 13 March at the Shanghai circuit, as part of the second round of the World Championship – the Chinese Grand Prix.

Antonelli sets historic qualifying record

On Friday, 13 March, qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix took place. First place went to Italian Mercedes driver Andrea Cimi Antonelli, for whom this was his first pole position of his career.

At the age of 19 years and 201 days, he became the youngest qualifying winner in Formula 1 history. The Italian surpassed the record set by Sebastian Vettel, who secured pole position in 2008 in a Toro Rosso car at the age of 21 years and 72 days.
