This was reported by Reuters
Circumstances of the incident
According to official reports, the shooting took place at the security checkpoint of the Washington Hilton hotel. An armed man fired at a Secret Service agent, who was saved by his bulletproof vest. Commenting on the incident at an emergency press conference at the White House, Donald Trump praised the security personnel’s actions:
“A man armed with several types of weapons attacked the security checkpoint and was taken down by very brave Secret Service agents,” Trump said.
The President also added that the attacker acted aggressively and swiftly: “He attacked from a distance of 50 yards... He was moving. He was really moving.” Describing the attacker, Trump called him a “sick man” and noted: “He was a guy who looked pretty sinister when he was in a bad mood.”
Reaction from the security services
At the time of the shooting, there were around 2,600 guests in the ballroom. Secret Service agents immediately surrounded Donald Trump and Melania Trump, escorting them out of the building. At the same time, security personnel ensured the safety of members of the cabinet, including Marco Rubio and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. To protect the officials, agents were forced to take up defensive positions directly in the hall.
Presidential security context
This attack posed yet another challenge for the US Secret Service following the attempted assassinations of Trump in 2024 in Pennsylvania and Florida. It is noteworthy that the incident took place at the same hotel where Ronald Reagan was assassinated in 1981. Due to the shooting, the official dinner was cancelled, and Donald Trump proposed postponing the event until the following month.
