The US and Iran are preparing for new talks
This is reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing sources.
What is known about the possible talks
According to the publication’s sources, the talks are planned to take place in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, with the participation of mediators. The parties are reportedly working on a one-page, 14-point memorandum designed to last one month. The document is intended to set out the framework for negotiations on ending the war.
What the US and Iran might discuss
According to the WSJ, the main topics of the talks include:
- Iran’s willingness to discuss its nuclear programme;
- the possible removal of part of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium abroad;
- the US’s intention to lift the blockade of Iranian ports for the duration of the talks;
- the issue of Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz;
- the possible extension of the talks beyond the one-month deadline.
At the same time, according to the publication, the issue of easing sanctions remains one of the most contentious and could complicate the negotiation process. US President Donald Trump told journalists that he expects a signal from Iran in the very near future.
“I’ll probably get a letter tonight. We’ll see how it goes. We’ll find out soon,” Trump said.
