US suspends immigration visas for dozens of countries
The administration of US President Donald Trump has decided to temporarily suspend the processing of immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries. It is reported by The New York Times with reference to the statement of the US State Department.
According to US officials, the decision is aimed at curbing migration from countries whose citizens, according to Washington, «unacceptably often use social assistance at the expense of US taxpayers». The full list of countries has not been officially released, but it has been confirmed that the restrictions will affect Somalia, Haiti, Iran and Eritrea, among others.
The suspension will take effect from 21 January 2026 and will last until the State Department reviews its application procedures. At the same time, the restrictions will not apply to short-term travel, such as tourist, business, or medical visas.
The State Department stressed that the administration will use its authority to turn away potential immigrants who may be deemed to be a "public burden. The decision is part of Trump's broader immigration campaign, which includes both tighter border controls and a review of legal immigration routes.
