Attitudes towards the US have become worse than those towards Russia – Reuters
This is reported by Reuters.
The survey showed that the US’s net perception rating has fallen to -16%. By comparison, Russia’s figure stands at -11%, whilst China’s is +7%.
Just two years ago, the US had a positive perception rating of +22%.
The authors of the study attribute the decline in Washington’s reputation primarily to President Donald Trump’s policies, which in recent months have significantly strained relations within NATO and with European allies.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, founder of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation and former NATO Secretary General, stated that the sharp decline in trust in the US is “sad, but not surprising”.
According to him, the global perception of America has been influenced by US threats to assert control over Greenland, Trump’s trade tariffs, cuts to aid for Ukraine, the US-Iran conflict, and, against this backdrop, statements about a possible US withdrawal from NATO.
Europe was particularly stung by Trump’s remarks that Washington might reconsider its participation in the Alliance after European countries refused to send a fleet to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
As part of the survey, respondents were also asked which country they considered the greatest threat to the world.
The most common answers were Russia, Israel and the US.
The survey was conducted by Nira Data between 19 March and 21 April 2026. Over 94,000 respondents from 98 countries took part in the poll.
The report was published ahead of the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, which will take place on 12 May in Copenhagen.
