Sweden detects Russian submarines in the Baltic Sea almost every week
According to the head of the operational management of the Swedish Navy, Captain Marco Petkovic, the Swedish Navy almost weekly records the presence of Russian submarines in the Baltic Sea. This was reported by The Public citing The Guardian.
Petkovic notes that Moscow systematically increases its military potential in the region: in particular, approximately one "Kilo" class submarine is planned to be introduced into the Russian armed forces each year.
There is also an increase in other maritime activities — against the backdrop of statements about possible sabotage against underwater infrastructure, the appearance of a "shadow fleet" of tankers, and the risk of drone attacks.
In response to the escalation of the situation, Sweden and its NATO allies are already conducting joint anti-submarine exercises. Since 2025, a mission has been operating aimed at protecting strategic underwater cables and maritime infrastructure.
Despite the tension, the Swedish fleet declares a steady readiness to counter underwater threats. Petkovic warned that in the event of a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, even greater deployment of Russian forces in the Baltic could be expected — and called on allies to strengthen maritime control.
