The 2026 earthquake in Turkey shook the province of Malatya

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the Battalgazi district of the Turkish province of Malatya on the morning of 20 May.
According to the Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management, the epicentre of the earthquake was in the Battalgazi district.
The tremors were recorded at a depth of 7.03 kilometres.
What is known about the aftermath
The earthquake was also felt in a number of neighbouring provinces.
After the tremors, people began to leave buildings and gather in open spaces.
Due to the earthquake, schools in the Battalghazi area have been closed.
Work is currently underway to survey the area.
Other earthquakes
On 20 May, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 also struck the south-western Japanese island of Amami in Kagoshima Prefecture.
No tsunami warning was issued following the quake.
It was also reported that a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Guangxi region in southern China on Monday.
Two people were killed and four others were injured as a result.
