The Ascension of the Lord 2026
The Ascension of the Lord is one of the most important feasts in the Christian calendar. It is one of the Twelve Great Feasts and falls on a different date each year, as it is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter. ThePublic reminds you when Ascension Day will be celebrated in 2026, and also explains the significance, traditions and taboos associated with this day.

The Significance of the Ascension

The Ascension of the Lord is a feast day celebrated on the 40th day after Easter. According to the biblical account, it was on this day that Jesus Christ, whilst with his disciples on the Mount of Olives, ascended into heaven. In doing so, He opened the way to salvation for every believer.

The feast symbolises the victory of the spiritual over the physical and marks the end of the Easter season. Ten days later, another major feast follows — Trinity Sunday.

When is Ascension Day 2026 in Ukraine

As the date of Easter changes every year, the date of the Ascension of the Lord is also variable.

In 2026, Easter falls on 12 April, so Orthodox believers celebrate the Ascension 40 days later — on 21 May.

Western Christians, however, celebrate the Ascension a week earlier — on 14 May.

Traditions of the Ascension

On the day of the Ascension of the Lord, solemn services are held in churches. Believers gather together to honour one of the key events in Christian history — the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven. After the service, people usually return home to spend time with their families around the festive table.

Main traditions of the Ascension:

Attending the service. Believers attend a church service during which special prayers and Gospel readings dedicated to the Ascension are recited.

Festive meal. After attending church, families gather together to share a meal, socialise and give thanks to God for peace, health and blessings.

Decorating churches. In preparation for the feast, churches are adorned with fresh flowers, greenery and festive banners, emphasising the solemnity and spiritual elevation of the occasion.

What is forbidden on the Ascension of the Lord

On this day, it is forbidden to:

  • Swear, argue, quarrel or use foul language.
  • Doing housework, such as cleaning, washing or sewing.
  • Engaging in heavy labour, such as sowing, digging, etc.
  • To cry or be sad, or to think about bad things.
  • Throwing rubbish on the street or spitting.
  • Refusing to give alms.
  • Arrange a wedding.

The day should be spent in peace and good spirits.

How to prepare your home for Ascension Day

Tidy the house in advance, before the holiday begins.

Decorate your home with fragrant herbs — mint, thyme, and calamus.

Prepare some food: homemade bread, pies, honey, cheese and pastries.

Gather as a family for a shared prayer and a warm evening meal.

Remember that 21 May is also Vyshyvanka Day in Ukraine.
