The remains of Andriy Melnyk, one of the leaders of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists, and his wife Sofia were brought to Kyiv on the night of 22 May.

This was announced by the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ.

The Melniks’ coffins have been placed in the cathedral for public viewing. On 22 and 23 May, those wishing to do so may come to the cathedral to pray and pay their respects to the couple.

The couple’s remains are scheduled to be reburied on 24 May at the National Military Memorial Cemetery.

The exhumation of the Melniks’ remains took place in Luxembourg on 19 May

The remains of OUN leader Andriy Melnyk and his wife Sofia have been returned to Ukraine via the Slovak border. The day before, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that decisions regarding the reburial of UNR Colonel Yevhen Konovalets are being prepared.

Who is Andriy Melnyk

Andriy Melnyk was a Ukrainian military and political figure, a colonel in the UNR army, and one of the leaders of the Ukrainian nationalist movement of the 20th century. Following the death of Yevhen Konovalets in 1938, he took the helm of the Leadership of Ukrainian Nationalists.

During the Second World War, Melnyk attempted to establish Ukrainian military units, but was subsequently arrested by the German authorities and sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

After the war, he lived in Luxembourg, where he continued his activities and advocated for the unification of Ukrainian organisations abroad. He died in 1964 and was buried in Luxembourg.
