The heatwave will put a strain on Ukraine’s power grid: Yasno advises people to charge their power banks
This was announced by Serhiy Kovalenko, CEO of Yasno.
According to him, high temperatures cause a sharp increase in electricity consumption. People are using air conditioning more frequently, and the additional load is being generated not only by homes but also by offices, shopping centres and businesses.
In Kyiv, every additional +3°C, according to Kovalenko, adds approximately 100 MW to the load on the power grid.
Why the heatwave is dangerous for the power grid
Kovalenko explained that the heat puts double pressure on the energy sector: electricity consumption rises, whilst equipment has to operate under more challenging conditions.
This is particularly noticeable after four years of full-scale war, during which the Russians have repeatedly attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Following the winter shelling, energy workers managed to stabilise the system and bring a significant proportion of the damaged equipment back into operation. At the same time, the active season of repairs and restoration is currently underway.
Part of the infrastructure is undergoing repairs, whilst another part, according to Kovalenko, is operating almost at full capacity.
Advice for Ukrainians
The CEO of Yasno stated that he expects the heatwave to pass without any significant restrictions.
At the same time, he urged Ukrainians to prepare: to charge their mobile phones, power banks and other essential devices, and to keep an eye on official announcements from the energy sector.
According to Kovalenko, in such a situation it is worth being prepared for various scenarios, even if the energy sector is doing everything possible to ensure the system operates stably.
What will the weather be like?
A heatwave has already swept across parts of Europe, with record temperatures recorded in some countries. The heat has led to deaths among the elderly and an increase in the number of drowning incidents, as people flock to bodies of water in search of relief from the heat.
The high temperatures are now moving eastwards, particularly towards Ukraine.
According to the forecast by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, temperatures in Ukraine may exceed +35°C in the final days of June.
