The Counter-Intelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine has detained an engineer from a local heating network in the Donetsk region who is suspected of collaborating with two Russian intelligence services. According to the investigation, he was passing on the coordinates of targets in Sloviansk for missile, air and drone strikes.

The Counter-Intelligence Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine has detained a man in the Donetsk region who is suspected of collaborating with both the Russian Federal Security Service and the Russian military intelligence agency, the GRU. According to the investigation, the agent turned out to be an engineer at a local heating network who was coordinating Russian forces’ missile, bomb and drone attacks on Sloviansk.

The investigation found that the man was recruited via a Telegram channel administered by a staff member at the Smolensk Military Hospital. The investigation established that she maintained contact with both Russian intelligence services and sought out potential agents for them.

After being recruited, the suspect, using work-related trips as a cover, travelled around Sloviansk and the surrounding areas to identify the locations of the Ukrainian Defence Forces. According to the investigation, he was to pass on the information gathered to the Russian side to prepare new attacks on the community.

According to the case file, the man stored photographs and video recordings on his mobile phones, along with the coordinates of Ukrainian targets, for subsequent transmission to representatives of the Russian Federation.

The SSU reported that its officers had identified the suspect in advance, documented his activities and contacts with representatives of the Russian Federation, and subsequently detained him at his place of residence.

During searches, law enforcement officers seized three mobile phones which, according to the investigation, the man was constantly changing to maintain covert communication with Russian intelligence services.

SSU investigators informed the detainee that he is suspected of an offence under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: high treason committed under martial law. If found guilty, he faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The comprehensive operation was carried out by SSU officers in the Chernivtsi region in conjunction with investigators from the SBU Main Directorates in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, under the procedural supervision of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
