The US Senate is calling for the release of aid to Ukraine
This is according to the Associated Press.
Lawmakers demand explanations from the Pentagon
In a letter to the head of the Pentagon, senators expressed concern over the delay in the allocation of $400 million in aid to Ukraine and a further $200 million for defence programmes in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. According to the authors of the letter, these funds were approved by Congress last year, but the Department of Defence has yet to provide a plan for their use. The letter was signed by representatives of both parties, including Democrats Dick Durbin, Michael Bennet and Catherine Cortez Masto, as well as Republicans Chuck Grassley, Kevin Cramer and Tom Tillis. The senators stressed that further delay could weaken the deterrence of Russia and cause concern among US allies in Europe.
Dissatisfaction with the Trump administration’s policies is growing in Congress
According to the AP, disputes between Congress and President Donald Trump’s administration over support for Ukraine and European partners have intensified in recent weeks. In particular, some Republicans are criticising the delay in military aid to Kyiv and calling for a tougher policy towards Russia. Meanwhile, an initiative is being pushed through the House of Representatives to impose new sanctions against Moscow and provide Ukraine with an additional $1 billion in military aid. Although the bill’s chances of final approval remain slim for now, its authors hope to demonstrate US lawmakers’ support for Ukraine.
