Trump threatens ground strikes on Venezuela over drug trafficking
US President Donald Trump has stated that the US may ‘very soon’ resort to ground strikes on Venezuelan territory if the country continues to supply drugs to the United States. This was reported by The Public with reference to The Guardian. According to Trump, not only maritime smuggling routes will be targeted, but also land routes used to transport drugs, which, according to Washington, are used by Venezuelan cartels.
Earlier, the US military carried out a series of air strikes on ships suspected of transporting drugs in the Caribbean Sea, which, according to the US, belong to organisations that they have classified as ‘narco-terrorist’.
Official US representatives say that such actions are a necessary part of the fight against international drug cartels that pose a threat to American security.
At the same time, Venezuela and its allies call these intentions a cover for possible interference in the country's internal affairs and threaten a decisive response to attempts to violate sovereignty.
