Trump has suggested that the war with Iran could come to an end in the coming weeks
US President Donald Trump has stated that the war against Iran could be over within two or three weeks. According to him, the United States will withdraw from the conflict as it sees no need to continue its involvement, Bloomberg reports.
Trump noted that he does not rule out the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran during this period, but stressed that a deal is not a prerequisite for ending the war. He added that the US will withdraw from the conflict once Iran is unable to acquire nuclear weapons.
According to the president, regime change was not the aim of the operation; the main objective was to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Trump stated that this goal has been achieved.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said the president intends to address the nation with a statement on Iran.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States sees an end to the war, but emphasised that the administration’s objectives would not be achieved in the coming days.
Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with allies over their involvement in the issue of opening the Strait of Hormuz and stated that the US does not plan to take responsibility for unblocking it.
At the same time, he has not ruled out the possibility of further strikes on Iranian territory to force Tehran to the negotiating table.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the country is prepared for any confrontation with US forces. He confirmed that there had been contact with US Special Representative Steve Witkoff, but noted that this did not mean negotiations were taking place.
Despite statements about a possible withdrawal, the US continues to deploy additional forces to the region. In particular, another aircraft carrier strike group is heading to the Middle East.
