Trump has once again made Davos the centre of world politics
This year's World Economic Forum in Davos was once again the centre of global attention, largely due to the participation of US President Donald Trump. The organisers acknowledge that his arrival was one of the reasons for the record number of high-ranking guests. The forum, which until recently was considered to be losing influence, attracted about 3,000 participants, including nearly 65 heads of state and government and six G7 leaders, according to Politico.
However, the main topic of discussion was not technological transformation or artificial intelligence, but global instability. Experts talk about a combination of economic, political and security crises that are shaping a new reality in the world order. Against this backdrop, Trump's statements about possible trade restrictions against European countries and his harsh rhetoric regarding Greenland have only exacerbated tensions between the US and Europe.
Davos is of particular importance to Ukraine. On Wednesday, the leaders of the so-called coalition of the willing plan to discuss with Trump the parameters of security guarantees for post-war Ukraine, which were previously worked out in Paris. President Volodymyr Zelensky is interested in direct contact with the American leader, as Washington remains a key player in the peace process. At the same time, diplomatic circles do not hide their concern that differences between the US and Europe could complicate further support for Ukraine.
The official theme of this year's forum is "The Spirit of Dialogue," but participants acknowledge that the reality is much harsher. Geopolitics, Russia's war against Ukraine, and the threat of a split in the transatlantic partnership effectively set the agenda for Davos 2026.
