A petition has been launched in Kyiv to honour the memory of Uncle Sasha, the caretaker who died in the terrorist attack
This is reported on the Kyiv City Council website.
As of now, the petition has gathered over 3,500 signatures out of the 6,000 required for consideration. The author of the petition, Anastasia Magonova, is calling on the city authorities to officially recognise the actions of the man known to local residents as ‘Uncle Sasha’.
How they propose to honour the hero
The petition suggests several options for commemorating Oleksandr Perha:
- erecting a memorial sculpture or plaque at the site of the tragedy;
- award him a posthumous city honour;
- hold an official public commemoration at the capital city level.
“His actions are an example of courage, humanity and self-sacrifice,” the petition states.
The terrorist attack in Kyiv on 18 April: what is known
According to the authors of the petition, during the terrorist attack on Demiivska Street in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, a man shielded a child with his own body and saved the child at the cost of his own life. The petition emphasises that the city must not only endure tragedies but also preserve the memory of those who save others at critical moments.
As a reminder, caretaker Oleksandr Perga died on 20 April as a result of fatal injuries. Doctors fought to save his life, but were unable to do so. Neighbours remember the deceased as a kind and caring man who always helped others. He had worked for the Housing and Utilities Department since 2021 and looked after the residents’ comfort. He was buried on 22 April.
