Since 2024, Chinese military personnel have been undergoing training at a training ground belonging to the Russian force fighting in Ukraine
The Economist reports this, citing sources familiar with European intelligence data.
According to the publication, the military complex where the exercises took place is regularly used by Russia’s 8th Combined Arms Army, which is fighting in Ukraine.
There, Chinese officers undertook a series of training courses based on the Russian forces’ experience against Ukraine. These included operations involving drones, assaults on command posts, and combat operations in built-up areas, trenches and wooded terrain.
In addition, the training covered field medicine and the laying of anti-tank, anti-personnel and mixed minefields. The Economist notes that all these standard operational procedures have changed dramatically since the start of the war in Ukraine, particularly due to the proliferation of drones.
The publication adds that such knowledge could give China an advantage in a potential future war against Taiwan. As well as the exercises in Russia, the Chinese army is keen to study how Russian and Ukrainian forces use and jam drones, as well as how infantry and other operations are conducted under conditions of complete aerial control by drones.
China is also studying Russian intelligence obtained during the war regarding American and allied weaponry, in particular the HIMARS rocket launchers used by Ukraine and Taiwan.
It should be recalled that it was previously reported that China had begun secretly preparing for Putin’s departure and a change of power in Russia.
