In Ukraine, the system for deferring military service obligations needs to be reviewed, and the current deferrals need to be examined. The Verkhovna Rada believes that the problem lies not only in the possibility of deferral itself, but also in the approaches to monitoring, as some of these decisions may be unjustified.

Yuriy Zdebskyi, a Member of Parliament from the “Servant of the People” party, told the “Telegraph” about this.

In Ukraine, all men’s deferrals need to be reviewed as part of the reform of the mobilisation and deferral system.

According to MP Yuriy Zdebskyi, the issue may concern not only businesses but also students who have deferrals.

He noted that the issue of deferrals is complex and is currently the subject of much speculation.

At the same time, according to the MP, there are also issues with the deferral system.

“Of course, the booking system needs to be reviewed. There is currently a lot of speculation on this topic, but there are also questions regarding deferrals. People are becoming students at the ages of 50 and 40,” said Zdebsky.

The MP believes that the problem lies not so much in the reservation system itself, but in the approach to its administration and oversight.

According to him, there are currently quite a few unjustified deferrals, which may in fact be “bogus”.

At the same time, he emphasised that there are also those who genuinely perform important work at critical enterprises.

Zdebsky noted that in such cases, the exemption should be retained, as the country must continue to function during the war.

“This is quite a difficult conversation. But we need to think and change our approaches, create clear rules. We need to track reservations and deferrals, and to do this, we must establish an appropriate supervisory body,” the MP stated.

Who needs the quota

Zdebsky emphasised that the quota should be for the agricultural sector.

They are also needed by farmers and workers in critical infrastructure.

According to the MP, this is necessary so that the state can function under wartime conditions.

At the same time, he stressed that such a system must not become a way for those who simply do not want to serve to avoid the front line.

“We need to improve conscription, mobilisation, deferrals and so on. The army needs people,” Zdebsky concluded.

What else is being discussed in the Rada

Earlier, one of the possible approaches to changes in the deferment system had already been discussed in the Verkhovna Rada.

This involved partially lifting exemptions for employees of enterprises.

In particular, this could even apply to critical institutions, including energy companies.

At the same time, Zdebsky emphasises that the approach must be balanced: the army needs people, but critical enterprises must also continue to operate.

As reported by ThePublic, mobilisation from 1 May will take place under the current rules without any changes
