Russia sees no health risks to Tuapse residents from the ‘oil rains’
Popova said this in response to questions from journalists.
“My colleagues are working there, doing everything they can to ensure there are no risks to local residents. Any discrepancies that can be identified are analysed by my colleagues, who promptly advise the public on how to behave. As of today, everything that could be done has been done. We have the situation under control. There is no [health risk] today,” she said.
Earlier, Rospotrebnadzor stated that tests carried out in Tuapse on 28 April showed only a slight exceedance of the hygiene standards for the maximum single concentration of benzene in the air. And the level of pollution is reportedly lower overall than it was during the extinguishing of the previous large-scale fire, which began on the night of 20 April.
Despite this, residents of the city, particularly those in neighbourhoods closest to the refinery, are being asked to limit their time outdoors, keep windows closed, and wear masks if they need to go outside.
According to The Moscow Times, against the backdrop of ‘oil rains’ in Tuapse and drone attacks, Russians have begun to cancel their holidays in the Krasnodar Krai. Demand for hotel rooms in the region for the May bank holidays has fallen by 20.7% year-on-year, according to the Travelline service.
What is happening in Tuapse
As a reminder, the Tuapse oil refinery has already been attacked several times by Ukrainian drones. The first strike took place on 16 April. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a hit was recorded on the refinery’s tank farm, followed by a fire on the site.
The General Staff explained that this facility is involved in supplying the Russian occupation forces on Ukrainian territory.
The second attack, on 20 April, took place just one day after the fire had been extinguished. Ultimately, the second fire was only put out on 24 April. Almost 300 people and 77 pieces of equipment were deployed to tackle the blaze. As reported by Telegram channels, following the UAV attack, an oil slick covering an area of 10,000 square metres formed in the Black Sea, and ‘oil rain’ fell from the sky.
On the night of 28 April, drones again attacked the city of Tuapse in the Krasnodar Krai of the Russian Federation. The local oil refinery was once again hit, and a fire broke out there.
