American journalist Shelley Kittleson has been kidnapped in Baghdad: what we know
CNN reports this.
The US government is monitoring her abduction and is working with the Iraqis to secure her release.
It is currently unknown who is responsible for the abduction, but media sources say she had been warned of a possible abduction by the Iranian proxy group Kataib Hezbollah. US Assistant Secretary of State Dylan Johnson wrote that the Iraqi authorities had detained a member of this group linked to the abduction.
The US television channel Al-Monitor reported that Kittleson was taken from near a hotel in the very centre of the capital.
“Kataib Hezbollah” is an Iranian-backed Shia paramilitary group operating in Iraq and Syria. It has attacked Americans on numerous occasions.
