A suspect in a terrorist attack has been arrested in Bucha
At 05:35 on 23 March, the 112 emergency hotline received a report from a resident of Bucha regarding an explosion on one of the town’s streets. The blast wave damaged the windows and façade of her house, according to the National Police of Ukraine.
After the emergency services arrived at the scene, another explosion occurred. The area was immediately cordoned off, security was provided, and residents were warned of the potential danger of further explosions. Two law enforcement officers sustained injuries whilst working at the scene; their lives are not in danger.
Within a few hours, officers from the National Police, in conjunction with the Security Service of Ukraine, detained a suspect. According to preliminary information, he is a 21-year-old local resident.
The detainee stated that he had met the unknown individual through a computer game. Subsequently, this contact began to threaten him, claiming to know his mother’s whereabouts and allegedly monitoring her via a drone, and demanded that he plant explosives.
According to the case file, the suspect manufactured two homemade explosive devices following the instructions he had received. Each was equipped with a mobile phone for remote activation. He left one device under a bench near the entrance to a residential building and placed the other near a rubbish bin.
The Security Service of Ukraine has opened criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Investigations are ongoing, and law enforcement officers are establishing all the circumstances of the crime.
The investigation is being conducted under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
