In Kyiv, a man sold the apartment of his deceased friend's wife — the prosecutor's office opened a case
According to ThePublic.info, citing the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office, a 44-year-old resident of Kyiv has been formally charged with large-scale fraud under Part 5 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers fraud involving particularly significant amounts.
Investigators say the suspect had a long-standing friendship with a man who inherited an apartment in the Obolon district of Kyiv but had not yet registered ownership. Claiming to be a real estate specialist, the suspect offered his help and persuaded the heir to issue a power of attorney authorizing him to manage the property.
Shortly afterward, the apartment owner died unexpectedly. The suspect reportedly found the body in the apartment and personally called the police — meaning he was fully aware that the power of attorney became invalid after the man’s death.
Nevertheless, on the same day, he went to a notary and signed a sale agreement — on behalf of the deceased — selling the apartment to his own wife.
The sale was documented at 1.5 million UAH (Ukrainian hryvnias), but no actual payment took place. As a result, the heirs lost their right to the property, causing significant financial damage to the estate.
During searches of the suspect’s residence, law enforcement officers seized documents related to the apartment transfer. The property has been officially seized under court order.
The investigation is being conducted by the Dnipro District Police Department of Kyiv, and if found guilty, the suspect faces 5 to 12 years in prison with confiscation of assets, as stipulated by Ukrainian law.
