An environmental alert has been declared in Moldova following Russia’s attack on the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Station
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has stated that Russia’s attack on the Novodnistrovsk hydroelectric power station in Ukraine has created an environmental threat to the Dniester River and could affect the country’s water supply. She wrote about this on the social media platform X.
According to Sandu, the consequences of the strike on the Novodnistrovsk hydroelectric power station in the Chernivtsi region, which took place on 7 March, have already led to an oil spill in the river.
“Russia’s attack on the Novodnistrovsk hydroelectric power station in Ukraine has led to an oil spill in the Dniester River, which threatens Moldova’s water supply. We have declared an environmental emergency and are taking action to protect our people,” she stated.
The President of Moldova also emphasised that Russia bears responsibility for the situation. “Russia bears full responsibility,” said Sandu.
According to Moldovan media reports, the country’s government has officially introduced a 15-day environmental alert in the Dniester basin. The decision came into force on 16 March 2026.
