A bottle labelled ‘Polonium’ was found in Germany during an Easter egg hunt
This is reported by Spiegel.
According to police, the container was found on the outskirts of the town of Fehingen an der Enz.
The discovery triggered a large-scale operation involving over 130 emergency personnel from the fire service and police, including specialists in radiation protection and hazardous materials. The area around the site was temporarily cordoned off but later reopened.
The Ministry of the Environment has seized the container and will examine its contents. Local authorities are also to investigate where the bottle came from and how it ended up there
The fire service considers the find to be genuine. The head of the district fire service explained that, in his opinion, the container looked authentic and was professionally labelled. Furthermore, the relatively heavy weight of the bottle suggested that it contained the substance in question.
However, initial on-site measurements revealed no signs of radioactivity, indicating the absence of polonium.
The two men who found the suspicious bottle were unharmed.
Polonium is a highly toxic radioactive element that is particularly dangerous if it enters the body.
