A record five tonnes of marijuana were seized in Serbia, and two suspects were detained.
Serbian police seized five tonnes of marijuana in the village of Konjuh near Krusevac. This is the largest drug seizure in the country's history. This was announced on 30 January by Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić, according to Vijesti.me.
According to him, the approximate value of the seized drugs is between 7 and 10 million euros. As part of the operation, law enforcement officers detained two people aged 68 and 40. Another suspect, believed to be the organiser of the criminal group, is being sought. Eight days earlier, police detained another 29-year-old suspect in the case.
During searches on the premises of an agricultural enterprise and on private land, police found not only drugs but also weapons. In particular, four automatic rifles, a pistol and other illegal weapons were seized. In addition, law enforcement officers found more than 1.5 million Serbian dinars in cash.
The Organised Crime Prosecutor's Office stated that the operation was the result of lengthy and coordinated work by the police and investigative authorities. According to the investigation, the marijuana was stored in the warehouses of Florakom doo, from where it was planned to be distributed mainly in Belgrade.
Ivica Dačić emphasised that, in addition to the record amount of drugs seized, the key result of the operation was preventing them from reaching the market. He said that in this way, the state had protected thousands of people, especially young people, from the spread of drugs.
In Serbia, the production and circulation of cannabis remain illegal. In recent years, the country has been stepping up its fight against drug trafficking as part of its course towards European integration. The investigation is ongoing, and the origin of the drugs is being established.
