A 25-metre papal cross has burned down in Warsaw
This is reported by Polish Radio for Ukraine
Police theory: tea lights rather than arson
The Warsaw police have officially ruled out the possibility of arson or the involvement of third parties. According to police spokesperson Kamil Sobutka, the fire was caused by numerous candles lit by worshippers at the foot of the cross:
“There were quite a few of them. As things stand, we have ruled out the possibility of deliberate interference,” the officer noted.
The historical significance of the monument
The cross destroyed by fire was not merely a religious structure, but a historical monument. It served as a reminder of the legendary service that John Paul II conducted in Warsaw in 1979 — a visit that proved to be a turning point in Polish history.
Restoration of the symbol
Despite the extensive damage to the 25-metre structure, the parish has no intention of leaving the site empty. The parish priest, Father Andrzej Krzesinski, assured the faithful that the memorial cross would definitely be restored in the near future.
