Police officers apprehend car thieves
Two residents of Zaporizhia were detained for illegal seizure of transport and theft from cars. For the totality of crimes, they face up to eight years in prison.

Zaporizhzhia police officers detained two city residents aged 24 and 25 who are suspected of a series of car thefts and illegal seizure of vehicles. The criminals were exposed during a joint operation by criminal investigation officers, territorial police units and patrol officers, it was reported on 19 January.

At the time of their arrest, the men were towing a stolen car belonging to a Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman. Law enforcement officers established that one of the suspects already had a criminal record for property crimes.

During the pre-trial investigation, it was found that one of the suspects worked at a service station. It was there that he illegally took possession of a BMW car, which was undergoing lengthy repairs, and used it for transportation. Together with an accomplice, the men also stole a car near a medical facility, from which they took a radio, speakers, a subwoofer and an amplifier.

The suspects then decided to sell the stolen cars. First, they towed a VAZ 21150 from a parking lot, and later towed a Volkswagen Transporter left near a shop. In addition, the perpetrators stole another car belonging to a military serviceman, which was parked nearby.

Investigators informed the suspects of their suspicion under Part 2 of Article 289 and Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
