Ukraine reinforces air defence with two more Patriot systems thanks to agreements with Germany
Two more Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems have been put on combat duty in Ukraine to strengthen the defence of cities and critical infrastructure. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
According to Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal, the deployment of additional systems became possible thanks to agreements with the German government. The US-made systems are designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles and provide multi-layered protection of strategic facilities
The Ministry of Defence emphasised the key capabilities of Patriot. The systems are versatile and capable of hitting aerodynamic and ballistic targets, including hypersonic missiles such as Zircon and Dagger with speeds of up to 11,000 and 16,000 km per hour. The system's radars can simultaneously detect up to 100 targets and track up to 8, and the PAC 3 MSE missiles provide direct guidance with high accuracy
Patriot can operate in automatic mode, which reduces the time to respond to threats, and hits targets at an altitude of up to 24 km and a range of up to 160 km, covering large areas. According to the ministry, the deployment of additional systems will reduce losses from strikes on energy and civilian facilities
As reported earlier, as part of the agreements between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Germany pledged to allocate €11.5 billion to support Ukraine in 2026, and the total package of new agreements exceeded €1.2 billion
