Trump has said he is willing to meet with Iran’s new supreme leader in order to reach a peace deal
US President Donald Trump has stated that he is open to meeting Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, should an agreement be reached to end the war, according to CNN.
Speaking to journalists in the Oval Office, Trump noted that he is not insisting on such a meeting, but does not rule out the possibility.
“I don’t want to meet. But if I do meet, it would be an honour for me to meet him. I would like to see if we can reach an agreement, but if we do reach an agreement, it is quite possible that I will meet him. I wouldn’t be against it,” said the US President.
When asked by journalists whether such a meeting could take place on US soil, Trump replied that he had not heard of any serious discussion on the matter.
“I haven’t actually heard much about it. I haven’t suggested it, but some people have,” he noted.
The US president also stated that he would treat Iran’s supreme leader with respect during a possible meeting.
“I would say I’m not his favourite person, but on the other hand, he’s probably a professional,” said Trump.
At the same time, he added that Mojtaba Khamenei “actually has a very good reputation in some circles”.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the conclusion of the ‘Epic Fury’ military operation against Iran and a transition to a new phase of action in the Middle East.
