Ukraine is ready to join the EU as soon as possible — European Commissioner Marta Kos
Ukraine should become a member of the European Union as soon as possible, because the EU is a peaceful project and has never allowed military action on its territory. This was stated by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos during a panel discussion at the Ukrainian House in Davos.
According to her, the key goals of the European Union are peace, freedom, prosperity and security. At the same time, she stressed that although Europe has experienced wars in the past, particularly in the Balkans, there has never been military action on the territory of the EU itself.
"The European Union is a peaceful project. There have been wars in Europe, including in my country, later in Croatia and Bosnia, but never within the EU. That is why we will accept you as soon as possible," said Marta Kos.
The European Commissioner also drew attention to Ukraine's progress in the enlargement process. She recalled that of the 68 reforms reflected in the enlargement report, 63 have already been implemented in full. In her opinion, this is a significant achievement, although the European Commission continues to assess each area of reform in detail.
Kos separately emphasised that the transformations in Ukraine are aimed not only at formal rapprochement with the EU, but also at improving the well-being of citizens. As an example, she cited Poland, whose economy has tripled since joining the European Union in 2004.
According to the European Commissioner, the implementation of high-quality reforms creates legal certainty and a favourable investment climate, which in turn attracts foreign business.
