Attention owners of the 2026 Nissan Leaf: the car could catch fire even whilst parked
This is reported by UAMOTORS
What is the problem?
The risk stems from a manufacturing defect in 78 kWh lithium-ion batteries. A fault inside the battery can cause a short circuit. This leads to critical overheating and subsequent ignition. Two cases of fire have now been officially confirmed — in the US and Japan. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the threat to property remains real.
Instructions for owners Nissan is already preparing a large-scale recall programme, which officially begins on 17 April. Until then, the manufacturer strongly recommends:
-
Park outdoors: Keep your car away from garages, houses and other vehicles.
-
Limit charging: Temporarily refrain from using charging stations until the vehicle has undergone a technical inspection.
-
Contact a dealer: After 17 April, owners will be able to have their battery checked free of charge. If a fault is found, Nissan undertakes to replace the modules or the entire powertrain, providing a courtesy car for the duration of the repair.
Impact on the market This situation could significantly affect sales of the updated Leaf range, as reliability has always been the model’s key selling point. Experts advise potential buyers to carefully check the vehicle’s VIN code before purchasing on the second-hand market or from dealerships.
