A monthly tax for electric car owners is being proposed in Ukraine
MP Serhiy Nahorniak made this statement during the broadcast of Rano.LIVE.
Why are changes being proposed and how much will people have to pay?
According to MP Serhiy Nahorniak, the current system creates unfair conditions. Owners of petrol-powered cars pay taxes included in the price of petrol or diesel, whilst owners of electric cars are currently exempt from such a burden. Furthermore, electric cars effectively receive a state subsidy through preferential electricity tariffs for charging.
The initiative provides for a tax scale based on the ‘class’ of the vehicle:
-
For a car costing around $30,000, the payment could amount to 4,000 hryvnias per month.
-
For cheaper or more expensive models, the rate is planned to be adjusted according to the vehicle’s value.
Main objective
The introduction of the tax is intended to balance the burden across different categories of car owners. The proposal is currently under discussion and requires detailed legislative drafting before being put to a vote.
