Ukraine is constructing a large-scale defensive line along its northern border – stretching from the Kyiv Reservoir all the way to Sumy. The aim is to prevent any further Russian offensive.

This was reported by Brigadier General Vasyl Syrotenko, Chief of the Engineering Corps of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Support Command, according to Ukrinform.

Sumy is ready – and this can even be seen from space

According to General Syrotenko, the city of Sumy has managed to prepare a fully-fledged echeloned defence in a short space of time – that is, several lines of defence one after the other.

“In a short period, it has managed to prepare a truly echeloned and robust defence. And this is noticeable, and it is visible, and it is even visible from space. You can watch in real time as it is being built,” he noted.

What is currently being built and why

At the same time, a continuous line of defence is being erected from the Kyiv Reservoir to Sumy. This is not a local reinforcement, but a large-scale construction project to which significant forces and resources are being devoted.

The main objective is to ensure that Russia:

  • is unable to launch a surprise attack from this direction;
  • is unable to create a so-called ‘buffer zone’;
  • cannot push Ukrainian forces back from the state border.

“This line of defence is being built, and a great deal of resources are being devoted specifically to completing it as quickly as possible,” explained General Syrotenko.

Context: Russians are pulling in reserves

Meanwhile, according to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Russia is regrouping its units and bringing reserves to the front.

This may indicate preparations for a new offensive.

However, most reports from Russian military correspondents about significant successes on the front line are not true.

Russia is facing mounting pressure due to the situation on the front line, economic problems and strikes by Ukrainian drones on its territory. European officials suggest that Moscow’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric may be linked to attempts to restart the negotiation process on its own terms.
