Border guards evacuated the crew of the bulk carrier ‘Golden Rose’ following a strike by a Russian drone
On the night of 22 July, servicemen of the Maritime Guard of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine successfully carried out a search and rescue operation in the Black Sea. The border guards evacuated the crew of the bulk carrier ‘Golden Rose’, which had been struck by a Russian drone.
According to preliminary information, a major fire broke out after the strike drone hit the stern of the vessel. The border guards detected the burning bulk carrier using technical surveillance equipment, after which Maritime Guard boats immediately set off for the scene.
The rescue operation took place at night under the constant threat of further attacks by Russian drones and missiles. Despite the danger, the crews of the patrol boats were able to approach the burning vessel and safely evacuate all the seafarers.
The border guards rescued 16 crew members, including two Syrian nationals and fourteen Egyptian nationals. All were brought ashore, where they underwent a medical examination. According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, none of the sailors sustained any injuries or other harm.
The State Border Guard Service noted that the Maritime Guard, as part of the Ukrainian Defence Forces, continues to carry out tasks to protect the state border, ensure the safety of navigation and rescue people in the Black Sea, despite the constant threat from Russian troops.
