Six Ukrainians and one American have been arrested in India: they are accused of plotting terrorist attacks

India’s National Investigation Agency has detained six Ukrainian nationals and one US citizen in connection with a case under the Prevention of Illegal Activities Act.
According to investigators, they are accused of conspiring to carry out terrorist activities against India.
The arrests took place last week in various locations. The US citizen was arrested at Kolkata airport. Three more Ukrainians were arrested at Lucknow airport and three at Delhi airport.
The first information report in the case was filed on 13 March. On 14 March, all seven were brought before a duty judge, who remanded them in custody for three days.
On 16 March, the suspects’ detention was extended by a further 11 days.
According to the investigation, the suspects held valid visas but travelled to Mizoram without the mandatory permit to enter the restricted zone.
Furthermore, it is alleged that they crossed the Myanmar border, met with ethnic armed groups and delivered several consignments of drones from Europe.
They have been charged under Section 18 of the Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act, as well as for breaching regulations regarding permission to stay in a protected zone.
Commenting on the situation, the US Embassy stated that it was aware of the incident but could not discuss cases involving US citizens for reasons of confidentiality. No
statement had been received from the Ukrainian Embassy at the time of publication. However, it is known that lawyers for the detainees were hired on behalf of the Ukrainian Embassy.
