Ukraine has recorded its first case of the new ‘Cicada’ coronavirus strain: symptoms have been identified
The ‘Cicada’ coronavirus strain
The Public Health Centre of the Ministry of Health has recorded the first case of a new strain of coronavirus known as ‘Cicada’. According to the WHO, there are currently no indications that the virus could trigger a widespread outbreak.

This was reported on the Ministry of Health’s website.

A new subvariant of the ‘Cicada’ virus was first detected in November 2024 in South Africa. It has since spread to at least 23 countries. It was named ‘Cicada’ due to its similarity to the insect, as it can remain dormant for years without spreading.

According to WHO estimates, there are currently no signs that the virus could cause a large-scale outbreak.

Symptoms of the ‘Cicada’ subvariant:

  • a runny nose;
  • fever;
  • cough;
  • headache;
  • fatigue;
  • loss of smell or taste;
  • eye irritation and rashes.

The Ministry of Health recommends a booster vaccination to prevent severe illness for adults and children with weakened immune systems or other health conditions, pregnant women, people aged 60 and over, and those at risk of severe illness and death from coronavirus infection. The vaccine is also recommended for members of high-risk occupational groups (e.g. doctors, teachers, military personnel and others).

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in March this year that between 2024 and 2026, cases of ‘Cicada’ were also recorded in Mozambique, the Netherlands, Germany, the US, Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Denmark.
