Easter 2026: a basket for 2,300 UAH and lard for 950 UAH

Price shock: lard is more expensive than veal
According to monitoring data from TSN journalist Olena Hushchyk, the cost of the food basket changes almost daily. The prices of meat delicacies are particularly striking:

Lard: 950 UAH/kg;

Homemade sausage: 280 UAH/kg;

Roasted sausage: 780 UAH/kg.
Economist Oleg Pendzin attributes this surge to the cost of generators and fuel. Meanwhile, vegetable prices have fallen slightly: cabbage now costs 100 UAH, and cucumbers — 300 UAH.
The Church’s stance
Despite folk traditions, religious scholars emphasise that the contents of the basket are not regulated by the church. “From a theological point of view, the basket is not necessary at all. Christ calls for mercy, not a lavish feast,” notes Andriy Kovalov.
Total bill: a full Easter set for a family of four (including wine and vegetables) will cost 2,347.94 UAH today.
