Dutch boxer Rico Verhoeven has lodged an official protest against the result of his title fight against Oleksandr Usyk, which ended in an early victory for the Ukrainian by technical knockout

This was reported by Suspilne Sport

Verhoeven is unhappy with the referee’s decision

The bout between Usyk and Verhoeven took place in Giza, Egypt, and ended in the 11th round. After the Dutchman was knocked down, the referee stopped the fight one second before the end of the round, awarding the Ukrainian a technical knockout victory. After the fight, Verhoeven stated that the referee had no grounds to stop the bout early and should have allowed the boxers to complete all 12 rounds.

At the time the fight was stopped, Verhoeven was leading on the judges’ scorecards

According to post-fight statistics, at the time the bout ended, one of the judges had Verhoeven ahead, whilst the other two had recorded a draw. However, Usyk managed to turn the fight around towards the end and sent his opponent to the canvas, after which the referee decided to stop the bout early. For Oleksandr Usyk, this victory was his first career win in the heavyweight division by technical knockout. Rico Verhoeven, who spent most of his career in kickboxing, was fighting in only his second professional boxing bout.
