World champion Oleg Doroshchuk has announced his intention to break the Ukrainian record
The athlete spoke about this in an interview with Glavkom.
According to Doroshchuk, clearing 2.40 m is the dream of virtually every professional high jumper.
“Every jumper wants to join the ‘2.40 Club’. I’m no exception. As for Bohdan Bondarenko’s record, beating it is also a dream. But that requires a lot of hard work,” the athlete noted.
Currently, the Ukrainian’s personal best indoors stands at 2.34 m, and outdoors at 2.31 m. The athlete hopes to improve his results in the near future. Doroshchuk also acknowledged that the Olympics in Paris were a turning point in his career. It was there that he set his outdoor personal best and gained confidence in his own abilities.
On training during the war and support for Ukraine
The track and field athlete said that he continues to train in his hometown of Kropyvnytskyi at the Zirka Stadium. According to him, even during a full-scale war, he manages to maintain the necessary level of fitness, although at times he has had to train without electricity or heating. Doroshchuk noted that foreign journalists regularly ask, during international competitions, how Ukrainian athletes prepare under wartime conditions. At the same time, the athlete emphasised that he has never considered changing his sporting nationality.
“Even if such offers were made, I wouldn’t consider them,” he said.
New goals after the world title
Despite his victory at the World Indoor Championships, Doroshchuk insists he does not feel any extra pressure due to fans’ expectations. According to the athlete, his main motivation remains setting new sporting goals and the desire to improve. The athlete also confirmed that he plans to compete at the Ukrainian Championships in Lviv, which will be one of the key stages in his preparation for international competitions this season.
