Zelensky: Ukraine and the US support the idea of a Christmas and New Year's truce
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine and the United States supported the idea of a ceasefire for Christmas and New Year holidays. The head of state said this during a conversation with Ukrainian journalists on the night of 16 December.
According to Zelenskyy, the initiative for a holiday truce was announced the day before by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and was discussed both in a public format and during closed talks between the partners.
The President stressed that the United States officially supports such a proposal, and Ukraine, for its part, is ready to agree to any format of a ceasefire, including an energy truce. At the same time, he emphasised that the implementation of this idea fully depends on the political will of the Russian Federation.
Zelensky also noted that previous attempts to negotiate a limited ceasefire have repeatedly failed due to Moscow's actions, despite international support for such initiatives.
