The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has stated that a face-to-face meeting at the Vatican in the spring of 2025 marked a turning point in his relationship with US President Donald Trump. He spoke about this in an interview with the American blogger Lori Lumer.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that a brief face-to-face meeting had been a key moment in his relationship with US President Donald Trump, which took place in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican during the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis in April 2025.

The head of state spoke about this in an excerpt from an interview with the American blogger and activist Laura Lummer, which was published on social media platform X.

‘The tone has changed. We reached a turning point in Rome, at the Vatican. It was a brief meeting. However, I have always said that it was a historic moment, because we transformed our relationship in the space of 15 to 20 minutes. There was no one else around us. It was a one-on-one meeting. I was very pleased to hear the president speak,” said Zelenskyy.

The President noted that it had been a good bilateral conversation.

“I was very pleased, because so much in life depends on such good relations,” he added.

Donald Trump also shared an excerpt from the interview on his Truth Social page.

Laurie Lumer reported that she had recorded an interview with Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Mariinsky Palace. According to her, there were no off-limits topics during the conversation, and the full version of the interview will be published shortly.

The blogger had previously stated that she had travelled to Ukraine to see the situation for herself and to verify information which, she said, she had received earlier.

It is worth recalling that on 28 February 2025, the meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump at the White House was cut short following a row. In April of that year, the presidents held a private meeting at the Vatican during the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis.
