The US Senate could vote on new sanctions against Russia as early as next week — Axios
Axios reports this, citing sources familiar with the progress of the negotiations.
According to the sources, the Democrats have informed the Republicans that they are ready to begin consideration of the bill as early as next week. The bill is supported by more than 60 senators. Following the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, who was one of the bill’s authors, the bill has been amended twice.
Initially, the maximum US tariff on third countries that continue to trade with Russia was reduced from 500 per cent to 100 per cent, and the US president’s ability to impose such tariffs was limited to a maximum of five countries. Subsequently, at Trump’s request, a provision regarding sanctions against Iran was added to the bill.
According to Axios, the senators took the president’s wishes into account by including sanctions against Iran in the bill, the validity of which was due to expire at the end of the year anyway. Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune stated that his party colleagues had no objections to these changes.
However, before the bill can be considered, Republican and Democratic leaders still need to agree on the voting procedure. Despite this, the Senate expects the bill to be brought before the chamber as early as next week.
