Changes in Germany from April: biometric checks at the border and card blocking
News.LIVE reports on what our citizens need to prepare for.
A new border system: the EES
Until 9 April, security measures are being stepped up at all airports and seaports in Germany due to the launch of the Entry/Exit System (EES). For Ukrainians, as third-country nationals, this means mandatory biometric data collection: fingerprints and facial photos taken directly at the terminal. The system will store this data for three years. Travellers should be prepared for additional queues during checks.
Financial changes: DKB cards to become invalid
By 30 April, all Deutsche Kreditbank (DKB) credit cards issued under the Miles & More programme will cease to be valid. To continue earning air miles and using the services, Ukrainians will need to:
-
open a new account with Deutsche Bank;
-
undergo a new credit check (Schufa and income analysis).
Cash and citizenship
Germany is also considering phasing out 1- and 2-cent coins — amounts on receipts are planned to be rounded up to 5 cents. Furthermore, we would like to remind you that to obtain a German passport in 2026, a minimum residence period of at least five years in the country remains a mandatory requirement.
