17 June 2026: What is today’s church feast day, and why was this day considered one of the most dangerous? Lid
On 17 June 2026, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine commemorates the holy martyrs Manuel, Savel and Ismail.
According to church tradition, the brothers lived in Persia in the 4th century and were brought up in the Christian faith. They travelled to Rome as envoys of the Persian king, but refused to take part in pagan rituals and openly professed their Christian faith.
For this, the brothers were imprisoned and executed.
Who is commemorated
On this day, we commemorate the feat of the holy martyrs Manuel, Savel and Ismail, who did not renounce their faith even under threat of death.
In the Orthodox tradition, people turn to them in prayer for the strengthening of faith, family harmony, mutual understanding amongst loved ones, and support in difficult life circumstances.
What you can do
On the day commemorating the saints, believers are encouraged to pray, attend church services and help those in need of support.
It was traditionally believed that this day was favourable for tidying the home, cleaning, doing the washing and getting rid of unwanted items.
There was also a belief that having your hair cut on 17 June helps to leave illnesses, setbacks and negative experiences in the past.
What not to do
The Church urges people to avoid quarrels, envy, gossip, insults and laziness on this day.
Folk traditions also advise:
– not to lend money;
– do not quarrel with family and loved ones;
– do not make empty promises;
– do not spread rumours or gossip.
It was believed that breaking these taboos could lead to misfortune and problems.
Folk superstitions
Our ancestors kept a close eye on the weather on 17 June.
The main signs for the day:
– bright sunshine in the morning – a sign of a rainy day;
– a crimson sunset — a sign of strong winds;
– lightning without thunder — a good harvest;
– a starry sky at night – a sign of a prolonged spell of warm weather;
– birds staying close to homes — a sign of bad weather.
An evening rainbow was considered a particularly good omen, foretelling a warm and peaceful summer.
Why was this day considered one of the most difficult of the year?
In the folk calendar, the date was known as the day of Manuil and Saveliy.
There was a belief that at this very time the boundary between the human world and the afterlife supposedly blurred, and so people tried to behave with particular caution.
Because of such beliefs, the day was considered one of the most mysterious and challenging of the year.
Who celebrates their name day
On 17 June, the following people celebrate their name day:
– Solomon;
– Saveliy.
Who are the name day celebrants?
A name day, or Angel Day, is a day to honour the saint whose name a person bears.
In the church calendar, a single name may appear several times a year, so people usually consider the date closest to their birthday to be their Angel Day.
