This was reported by UNIAN
Chernobyl Remembrance Day (40th anniversary)
On this day in 1986, an explosion occurred at the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The year 2026 marks exactly 40 years since the tragedy. Ukrainians honour the memory of the liquidators and reflect on the long-term impact of the disaster on the planet’s environment.
International Pilots’ Day
Today, pilots are being celebrated around the world. This professional holiday is intended to highlight the complexity and responsibility of the work carried out by pilots, who ensure safe air travel every day.
What is today’s church holiday
Following the switch to the new calendar, believers are honouring Saints Glafira and Basil of Amasia. Saint Glafira is considered a patron saint who helps strengthen willpower and heal emotional wounds. According to the old calendar, today is the feast day of the martyr Artemon of Laodicea.
Folk omens and traditions
Our ancestors called this day ‘Glafira-Pea-Sower’. It was believed that today one must sow peas or prepare a dish from them (porridge or pies) — this promised health and good fortune for the whole year.
Weather omens:
-
If the lilac has already blossomed, there will be no more frosts.
-
If there is plenty of sap in the birch trees, expect a rainy summer.
-
If leaves have appeared on the raspberry bushes, May will be warm.
What not to do today:
-
It is strictly forbidden to destroy birds’ nests or shout at them — this will bring misfortune.
-
You shouldn’t undertake any construction work or major repairs.
-
Fishing will be unsuccessful today, so it’s best to postpone it.
