26 March: Feast of the Archangel Gabriel — the feast of the herald of light and hope
Feast of the Archangel Gabriel
Today, 26 March, the Orthodox calendar marks the feast of the Archangel Gabriel. This is an important date in the Christian tradition, dedicated to one of the greatest heavenly messengers. Archangel Gabriel, whose name translates as ‘God is my strength’, appears in the Holy Scriptures as a herald of significant events in the history of humanity’s salvation.

The Feast of the Archangel Gabriel is celebrated the day after the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, highlighting the archangel’s role as the one who brought the good news of the Saviour’s birth to the Virgin Mary. He is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments: the archangel appeared to the prophet Daniel, revealing the mysteries of the future, and to the priest Zechariah, announcing the birth of John the Baptist. However, his most important mission was to announce to the Blessed Virgin Mary the Incarnation of the Son of God.

In church tradition, the Archangel Gabriel is a symbol of light, truth and hope. He is often depicted with a lily — a symbol of purity — or with a lamp, which personifies divine enlightenment. The Archangel is considered the embodiment of God’s will, which is revealed to humanity through the word and spiritual inspiration. This is why he is regarded as the patron of those seeking truth, as well as a herald of significant changes and new beginnings.

On this day, believers turn to the Archangel Gabriel with prayers for spiritual support, wisdom and the strengthening of faith. Requests for guidance in choosing the right path in life are of particular importance, as Gabriel symbolises divine guidance.

In folk tradition, this day is also associated with spring renewal. It was believed that after this feast, nature finally awakens, and with it, the human soul.

Omen for 26 March: The weather on this day may ‘foretell’ what the weather will be like at the end of September. If no clouds are visible after sunset, windy weather is expected the following day. A sunny and dry day promises a bountiful harvest in the future.

What not to do: According to ancient folk beliefs, spinning was strictly forbidden from this day onwards, as spring field work was beginning, and spinning was considered inauspicious for the future harvest.

What you can do today: In the Orthodox Church, 26 March is dedicated to prayers to the Archangel Gabriel. Believers ask him for healing from illness and for the protection of domestic animals, livestock and bees. The archangel is also the patron saint of hunters, protecting them from attacks by wild beasts, and the protector of fishermen on the water, helping them to avoid danger.
